4 Days Beach Relaxation
Ushongo Beach - Pangani
Highlights
A dreamy white sandy beach, tall palm trees swaying gently in the wind, a crystal-clear Indian Ocean – these are the words that describe the location of the small but beautiful beach lodge. This little paradise is located on the northern Swahili coast, about 20 km from Pangani. There is only a small fishing settlement nearby called Ushongo Beach, a wonderful retreat for those seeking peace and quiet. Beautiful coral reefs off the coast invite you to snorkel and dive. History buffs can take trips to Tanga and Pangani in the footsteps of German colonial rulers. The nearby Saadani National Park is also a worthwhile destination and offers a large number of giraffes, buffalos, wildebeests, antelopes and zebras – right on the Indian Ocean!
65 km south of Tanga, the wonderful beach lodge between Pangani and the Saadani National Park welcomes you warmly. The accommodation is idyllically located on the crystal-clear Indian Ocean in the palm-fringed bay of Ushongo Beach with a picturesque, kilometer-long white sandy beach on the doorstep. At the beach bar you can enjoy the onset of the African night with a wonderful sunset over a sundowner and dinner is served in the restaurant with a fantastic view of the Indian Ocean.
In addition to the bar, the restaurant and the wonderful beach, the beach lodge also has exciting excursions and activities to offer: you can dive, snorkel and kayak.
If you want to be active on land, you can go hiking and walks. Excursions to the Saadani National Park, a city tour or a boat trip on the Pangani River are also offered.
The small, cozy lodge is attractively furnished and offers guests a comprehensive service. The centerpiece is the beach bar and the restaurant under an impressive makuti roof. When the sun goes down, you can make yourself comfortable under the covered wooden terrace and enjoy a sundowner in style. The restaurant offers a magnificent panoramic view of the Indian Ocean. Fresh fish and seafood are on the menu, as are local fruit and vegetables. A small selection of snacks is offered at lunchtime, and a varied menu can be served in the evening.
The spacious and comfortable bungalows are lovingly furnished and convey a feel-good atmosphere. The rooms are furnished with a large double bed, mosquito net, wardrobe, safe, fan, terrace with table and chairs. Each bungalow has its own brick and tiled bathroom with shower, sink and toilet. The roof of the bungalow is traditionally woven from coconut palm leaves and guarantees a pleasant indoor climate.

Pangani, which is romantically located at the mouth of the Pangani River in the Indian Ocean and has 8.000 inhabitants, is still relatively undeveloped for tourism.
In the 19th century, an important trading base was established in Pangani, which became the most important end point of the northern caravan route. Pangani became rich through the trade in ivory and slaves, which could no longer continue at the end of the 19th century due to the high tariffs of the German East African Company. Pangani later experienced another boom due to the sisal boom, but this quickly died down again. Today, the only regular source of state income is the trade in coconuts. The endless plantations in Pangani contribute to over 50% of the country’s income!
The undeveloped nature of the place is evident as soon as you enter the region from the roads: they are not well developed or asphalted. The townscape of the fishing village is picturesquely characterized by former Arab commercial buildings and German colonial buildings; the beaches are among the most wonderful in the country and you can find wonderful dream beaches in particular in the fishing villages of Ushongo, about 20 km to the north. If you walk along the sandy beach, you will pass colonial houses with traditional tools in front of them; watch the children collecting mussels and enjoy the juice of the coconuts on the palm-lined sandy beach. Small traditional fishing boats pass by in the sea, patiently casting their nets in the water and seagulls circle in the blue sky looking for delicacies from the fish-rich salt water.
There are a number of excursions you can take in and around Pangani! If you are looking for diving spots and coral reefs on the Tanzanian mainland, you will find the best ones here. For example, there is an excellent reef for snorkeling on the island of Maziwe, 11 km away. If you want to see crocodiles, hippos and even dolphins, you can take a wonderful river tour on the Pangani River. On the southern bank, east of the fishing village of Bwemi, there are still ruins of a Portuguese fortress and a square with Islamic tombs from the 15th century. In the 17th century, the Portuguese invaded Muhembo, formerly Pangani, but no remains of them remain in the town itself.
About 60 km from Pangani lies the Saadani National Park – Tanzania’s only nature reserve that borders the Indian Ocean. Large palm trees sway gently in the cool breeze of the Indian Ocean. Turquoise waters lap the white sandy beach under the tropical East African sun, while traditional dhows slowly pass on the horizon and Swahili fishermen cast their nets. The park is located in the historic triangle between Bagamoyo, Pangani and Zanzibar and covers an area of approximately 1.100 km². Its location means that the climate is hot and humid at the same time.
A wide variety of animals can be observed on safaris and exploration tours: buffalo, giraffes, waterbucks, hartebeest, baboons and vervet monkeys share the reserve with numerous reptiles and birds. In addition, the adjacent ocean is home to numerous species of fish, green sea turtles, humpback whales and dolphins. You are very likely to see hippos and crocodiles on boat trips on the mangrove-lined Wami River. The Wami is also an excellent area for observing birds such as the kingfisher, the osprey and numerous species of waders.
