In this journey you’ll visit The Nyerere National Park the largest area of protected pristine wilderness remained in Africa and the jewelry of the Indian ocean the Mafia Island. The big advantage of visiting Nyerere National is the game viewing from the water, you’ll also engaged in different activities beside game drives like walking safari. It’s always spectacular watching the heard of elephants showering, playing and have fun as you sit in a boat in the middle of river Rufiji.

ITINERARY

In the morning we take the bush plane from the city of Dar es Salaam to the largest wildlife sanctuary in Africa: the Nyerere National Park.
As you approach the Siwandu Airstrip you will get an impressive view of the gigantic nature reserve and you will be able to make your first animal observations as you drive over dusty slopes to your accommodation.
 
Your accommodation is located right on the shores of Lake Manze, deep in the game reserve. The spacious tents are built along the shore in the shade of palm and acacia trees, so you can enjoy the view of the lake from your veranda.
The living tents are rustic but equipped with the greatest possible comfort and have a bathroom with shower and flush toilet.
You can also admire the view of the lake from the restaurant and elephants occasionally visit the camp to get to the lake. In the afternoon you can go on a boat safari either on the lake or on the Rufiji River and spot numerous crocodiles, hippos and water birds.

In consultation with the local guides, you can organize your game drives today. You can choose to go on a morning and afternoon game drive and return to camp for lunch, or spend the whole day on a game drive and enjoy a picnic in the great outdoors. There is a lot to observe early in the morning, so it’s worth getting up early. In an open off-road vehicle you explore extensive steppes and savannahs, numerous rivers and Miombo forests. The park is home to large herds of elephants and buffalo, giraffes, zebras, impalas, hippos and crocodiles. During the dry season, elephants move between the park and Niassa Game Reserves in Mozambique to seek out the last reserves of water. The reserve is also home to the endangered African wild dogs – one of the last places to experience the animals in their natural habitat.

In the morning you will go on a hike through the bush landscape with an experienced ranger. With keen observation skills, your companion will point out the tracks of various wild animals and explain the plants and trees of the reserve to you.
Then it’s time to say goodbye to this wonderful patch of untouched wilderness. With the bush plane you fly to Mafia Island, the small offshore island in the Indian Ocean. As you approach, you can enjoy the view of the palm-lined white beaches on the azure sea.
From Kilindoni, the small airstrip and also the island’s main town, you pass some sleepy fishing villages, mangrove forests and coconut and papaya fields.

Just relax, away from the hectic life. Unwind in a tropical environment. Enjoy peace and quiet in the spacious garden lined with coconut palms. Walk barefoot along the white beach and feel the warm sand under your feet – you can enjoy all of this to the full in the next few days on Mafia Island. If you prefer something a little more active, you can explore the protected underwater world of the Marine Park on snorkeling and diving trips, or try out your talent at deep-sea fishing. You can also take a trip around the island to get to know the friendly islanders, the lush vegetation and a wealth of wildlife.
The best season for whale shark sighting at Mafia Island is from October to February each year.

The drive to the airstrip gives you one last look at the small island paradise before you take a half-hour flight back to Dar es Salaam.
