8 Days Great Migration Group Safari

Moshi - Ngorongoro Crater - Serengeti - Mto wa Mbu - Moshi

Ngorongoro Crater & Serengeti Safari

Continue your Tanzania adventure after conquering Mount Kilimanjaro and discover the spectacular wildlife and landscapes of northern Tanzania on an unforgettable 8-day Tanzania safari.

Your journey takes you from the lush landscapes around Moshi to the extraordinary Ngorongoro Crater, one of Africa’s most remarkable wildlife destinations. Descend into the crater for an exciting game drive surrounded by dramatic volcanic scenery and an incredible concentration of wildlife. Lions, elephants, buffalo, hippos, hyenas and, with some luck, the endangered black rhino can all be found within this unique natural sanctuary.

From Ngorongoro, you continue into the legendary Serengeti National Park, one of the most famous safari destinations in Africa. Endless golden plains, abundant wildlife and untouched wilderness create the perfect setting for an authentic Tanzania safari experience. Your route takes you all the way north to Kogatende, where the landscape becomes the stage for one of nature’s greatest spectacles: the Great Migration.

Experience the Great Migration in Northern Serengeti

The Great Migration is one of the most spectacular wildlife events on Earth. Every year, more than one million wildebeest, together with hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles, move through the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem in search of fresh grazing and water.

In August, the herds are typically found in the northern Serengeti around Kogatende, making this one of the most exciting times of year for a Great Migration safari in Tanzania. With three nights in the Kogatende area, you have valuable time to explore the region and follow the movement of the herds.

With some luck, you may witness one of the legendary Mara River crossings, where thousands of wildebeest and zebras gather before making the dramatic crossing. The exact location and timing of the migration can never be guaranteed, which is part of what makes this experience so extraordinary. Your experienced safari guide follows the movements of the animals and adapts the game drives accordingly, giving you the best possible opportunities for wildlife encounters.

8-Day Great Migration Safari Itinerary

Karibu Tanzania – welcome to Tanzania!

After your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, your Afrimine Tours team will welcome you and transfer you to Moshi.

For guests joining the safari directly after the Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route, this is a relaxed day to recover after your mountain adventure. If you are joining the safari as a standalone trip, you can settle into Moshi and enjoy your first moments in Tanzania.

In the evening, enjoy dinner and meet your fellow travellers before your Tanzania safari adventure begins.

Accommodation: Camp Kimanganu Safari Lodge, Moshi
Meals: Dinner

After breakfast, you leave Moshi and travel towards the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

One of the great highlights of your safari awaits: the Ngorongoro Crater. Descend into the crater and begin your game drive through this extraordinary natural amphitheatre. The crater is home to an impressive concentration of wildlife and offers excellent opportunities for close encounters with African wildlife.

Keep your eyes open for lions, elephants, buffalo, hippos, hyenas, flamingos and other fascinating species. With some luck, you may even spot the rare black rhino.

Enjoy your picnic lunch during the game drive before continuing to your accommodation in the afternoon.

As the sun sets over the highlands, relax at your camp and prepare for the next stage of your journey into the Serengeti.

Accommodation: Tented Camp near Ngorongoro Crater
Meals: Breakfast, lunch box, dinner

After breakfast, your journey continues towards the legendary Serengeti National Park.

You enter the Serengeti through Nabi Gate and drive through the spectacular landscapes towards Seronera before continuing north to Kogatende.

The scenery changes as you travel deeper into the wilderness. Vast grasslands stretch towards the horizon while wildlife appears along the route. Your safari guide will make stops whenever there are interesting wildlife sightings.

As you approach Kogatende, you enter one of the most important areas of the Great Migration during August.

You arrive at Olmorijo Camp, your home for the next three nights, surrounded by the wild beauty of northern Serengeti.

Accommodation: Tented mobile Camp, Kogatende
Meals: Breakfast, lunch box, dinner

The next two days are dedicated entirely to the Great Migration and wildlife of Northern Serengeti.

From your camp in Kogatende, you head out on full-day game drives in search of the migrating herds. The exact location of the animals changes constantly, so your safari route remains flexible and follows the movements of the wildlife.

Millions of wildebeest and zebras move through the region, creating an extraordinary spectacle across the open plains. With patience and a little luck, you may witness one of the famous Mara River crossings, as thousands of animals gather at the river before plunging into the water.

But the migration is only part of the experience. Northern Serengeti is also home to an impressive variety of predators and other wildlife. Look out for lions resting in the shade, cheetahs scanning the plains, leopards hidden among the trees and elephants moving slowly across the savannah.

Each game drive is different. One moment you may be surrounded by a huge herd of wildebeest; the next, your guide may stop the vehicle for a completely unexpected wildlife encounter.

After a full day in the wilderness, return to Olmorijo Camp for a freshly prepared dinner and an evening around the campfire beneath the African stars.

Accommodation: Tented mobile Camp, Kogatende
Meals: Breakfast, lunch box, dinner

After breakfast, you leave the northern Serengeti and begin your journey towards Karatu.

The drive gives you another opportunity to enjoy the changing landscapes of northern Tanzania and, depending on wildlife activity along the route, there may still be time for additional game viewing.

By the afternoon, you reach the green highlands around Karatu. After several exciting days in the wilderness, your lodge provides a relaxing setting to slow down and reflect on your Great Migration safari experience.

Accommodation: Lodge in Karatu
Meals: Breakfast, lunch box, dinner

After breakfast, you visit Mto wa Mbu, a vibrant town known for its cultural diversity and traditional way of life.

During your guided village tour, you gain an authentic insight into everyday life in Tanzania. Explore local surroundings, meet people from the community and discover traditional crafts, agriculture and local culture.

After the visit, continue your journey back to Moshi.

In the evening, enjoy a final dinner together and celebrate the unforgettable experiences of your Tanzania safari – from the Ngorongoro Crater to the endless plains of the Serengeti and the Great Migration in Kogatende.

Accommodation: Camp Kimanganu Safari Lodge, Moshi
