ITINERARY
Your cultural adventure begins with a pickup in Arusha, Moshi, or Karatu. From there you travel through the scenic landscapes of the Great Rift Valley to the fertile village of Mto wa Mbu, whose name translates to “Mosquito River” because of the permanent water sources that support the area’s rich agriculture.
Banana Plantations
The tour usually starts in the village’s famous banana plantations, where more than 30 different varieties of bananas are grown. Your guide will explain how this staple crop is cultivated and used in many ways – not only as food but also as building material and even for art.
Local Art Project
Next, you may visit a local youth art project, where talented artists create colorful paintings inspired by Tanzanian life and nature. You will learn about their artistic styles and techniques and are welcome to ask questions or take photos. If you wish, you can purchase artwork directly from the artists – unique souvenirs that support the local community.
Makonde Wood Carving Workshop
Another highlight is the visit to a Makonde wood carving workshop. The Makonde people are famous for their intricate sculptures and masks. Watch skilled craftsmen carefully carve figures and household objects while explaining the cultural stories and meanings behind their work. Visitors even have the chance to try carving themselves.
Traditional Banana Beer – Mbege
During the tour you will also stop at a small local bar to taste Mbege, a traditional beer made from bananas and millet, mainly brewed by the Chagga tribe. The brewing process is labor intensive, and the drink is often served in a shared cup that is passed around the group – a symbol of hospitality and community.
Visit to the Local Market
Your village tour ends at the lively Mto wa Mbu market, where locals sell fresh fruits, vegetables, spices, and other goods. Walking through the colorful stalls is a real feast for the senses. Your guide will point out interesting products and invite you to smell or taste some of the local foods.
