Discover one of Africa’s last truly untouched safari regions with this extraordinary Journey to West Tanzania. This unique itinerary takes you far off the beaten path to explore the hidden gems of Tanzania: Gombe National Park and Katavi National Park. Combined with classic wildlife experiences in Tarangire and cultural insights along historic routes, this journey offers a rare blend of adventure, nature, and authenticity.

From chimpanzee trekking in dense rainforest to vast savannahs teeming with buffalo and elephants, this safari is designed for travelers seeking exclusivity, raw wilderness, and unforgettable encounters.

About the National Parks

Tarangire National Park is famous for its large elephant herds and iconic baobab trees. During the dry season, the Tarangire River becomes the only water source in the region, attracting a high concentration of wildlife. This makes it one of the best parks in Tanzania for close-up animal encounters in a classic savannah setting.

Gombe National Park is one of the smallest national parks in Tanzania but world-renowned for its chimpanzee population. Made famous by Jane Goodall’s research, the park offers a rare opportunity to observe wild chimpanzees in their natural forest habitat. Trekking through the lush hills above Lake Tanganyika is both physically engaging and deeply rewarding.

Katavi National Park is one of Africa’s most remote and untouched wilderness areas. It is known for its enormous herds of buffalo, large populations of hippos and crocodiles, and dramatic dry-season wildlife sensations. With very few visitors, Katavi offers an authentic safari experience where you may spend hours without encountering another vehicle.

You’ll be warmly welcomed upon arrival and transferred to a comfortable lodge in Arusha, nestled at the foot of Mount Meru. Take the rest of the day to unwind from your journey and soak in the peaceful ambiance of your surroundings.

After breakfast, depart for Tarangire National Park, known for its vast elephant herds and ancient baobab trees. During your game drive, expect to see elephants in large family groups, giraffes browsing acacia trees, zebras, wildebeest, and a variety of antelope species. Predators such as lions and leopards are also present. The Tarangire River attracts wildlife year-round, especially in the dry season, making for excellent viewing opportunities. Picnic lunch inside the park. Overnight near Tarangire.

After breakfast, leave the safari circuit and head into remote central Tanzania. The drive takes you past rural villages, farmland, and the impressive Mount Hanang rising above the plains. As you climb onto the Singida plateau, the scenery changes to rocky landscapes with massive granite boulders and wide views over valleys. This is a rarely visited part of Tanzania, offering an authentic glimpse into local life. Overnight in Singida.

Early departure for a long but scenic drive west. You will pass through miombo woodland, small settlements, and untouched countryside. Along the way, you may encounter local markets, honey traders, and traditional farming communities. Upon arrival in Tabora, visit the historic railway station, a relic of the German colonial era and once a key hub on the central railway line. Overnight in Tabora.

Visit the Livingstone Museum in Tabora before continuing your journey toward Kigoma. The route follows part of the historic caravan and slave trade paths that once connected the interior to the coast. As you approach Lake Tanganyika, the landscape becomes greener and more tropical. Arrival in Kigoma offers breathtaking views over the lake, one of the oldest and deepest lakes in the world. Overnight in Kigoma.

Enjoy a relaxed morning by Lake Tanganyika, where you can swim or watch local fishermen in traditional wooden boats. In the afternoon, visit Ujiji, a historic town where the famous meeting between explorers Stanley and Livingstone took place. Explore the small museum and learn about early exploration and local history. Return to your lodge for sunset over the lake.

Early morning boat transfer along the scenic shoreline of Lake Tanganyika to Gombe National Park. As you approach, dense rainforest-covered mountains rise steeply from the lake. After arrival and briefing, begin your chimpanzee trekking experience. The hike can be steep and requires moderate fitness, but the reward is unforgettable: observing wild chimpanzees up close as they feed, groom, and interact. You may also encounter other primates and bird species. Overnight near or in Gombe.

Another day dedicated to chimpanzee tracking and forest exploration. Each trek is unique, as chimpanzee movements vary daily. You will also have time to enjoy the pristine beach along Lake Tanganyika, one of the few places where rainforest meets a sandy lakeshore. Swimming and relaxing are possible after your trek. Overnight in Gombe or return to Kigoma depending on logistics.

Optional early morning chimpanzee trek for one last encounter. Later, return by boat to Kigoma. The afternoon is free for relaxation at your lakeside lodge.

A full day to unwind after your trekking adventure. Optional activities include swimming, kayaking, village walks, or simply enjoying the peaceful lakeside atmosphere. This is a perfect moment to recharge before continuing your safari.

Depart Kigoma for Katavi National Park via a scenic and remote route. Along the way, enjoy changing landscapes including forest, open plains, and small villages. Upon entering Katavi, begin your first game drive. The park is known for its large concentrations of wildlife, especially around the Katuma River, where hippos and crocodiles gather. Overnight in Katavi.

Into the Wild

Spend two full days exploring the vast and untouched wilderness of Katavi National Park, one of Africa’s most remote safari destinations. These days are dedicated to immersive game drives across different habitats, including open floodplains, miombo woodland, and river systems.

Expect extraordinary wildlife concentrations, especially during the dry season, when thousands of buffalo, elephants, and hippos gather around shrinking water sources. Large crocodiles can often be seen along the Katuma River, while predators such as lions, hyenas, and occasionally wild dogs follow the herds.

Your experienced guide will adapt each game drive to maximize sightings and explore different areas of the park, ensuring varied landscapes and wildlife encounters. You may visit seasonal lakes rich in birdlife, with over 400 species recorded, making this a paradise for bird enthusiasts.

A highlight is the visit to the sacred tamarind tree, an important cultural site for the local Wabende tribe, offering insight into the spiritual traditions of the region.

With very few visitors in the park, you will often experience hours of uninterrupted wildlife viewing without encountering other vehicles—creating a truly exclusive and authentic safari atmosphere.

Picnic lunches in the bush and optional full-day or split game drives (morning and afternoon) allow for flexible exploration.

After a final morning game drive, leave Katavi and travel toward Lake Tanganyika. The journey includes both paved and off-road sections through rural landscapes. Arrival at a remote lakeshore lodge where you can relax by the water and enjoy sunset views.

Enjoy two full days at the crystal-clear shores of Lake Tanganyika, one of the most beautiful and least explored lakes in Africa. Your lakeside lodge offers a peaceful and remote setting, perfect for unwinding after your safari adventure.

You can spend your time as actively or as leisurely as you wish. Swim in the calm, fresh waters of the lake, go kayaking along the shore, or explore nearby fishing villages to experience local life. Snorkeling is also possible, with unique freshwater fish species found only in this lake.

For those seeking relaxation, simply enjoy the stunning panoramic views, read a book by the beach, or watch the spectacular sunsets over the water. The atmosphere is quiet, untouched, and ideal for disconnecting from the outside world.

Optional guided walks and cultural interactions can be arranged, offering deeper insight into the region and its people.

Depart the lakeshore and drive toward Mpanda. This is a scenic journey through remote countryside, offering a final glimpse of western Tanzania’s landscapes and rural life. Overnight in Mpanda or prepare for your onward flight.

Transfer for your domestic flight from Mpanda to Dar es Salaam. End of your unforgettable West Tanzania safari adventure.

In 1960, a 26-year-old British woman named Jane Goodall arrived in Gombe, with no formal scientific training – just a notebook, binoculars, and a passion for animals. Sponsored by the famed anthropologist Louis Leakey, she began what would become the longest-running field study of any wild animal species.

Her groundbreaking discovery – that chimpanzees make and use tools – redefined our understanding of what separates humans from other animals. She observed them stripping leaves off twigs to “fish” for termites, a behavior previously thought to be uniquely human.

Jane also documented the rich emotional and social lives of chimpanzees: their deep familial bonds, playful behavior, and even wars between rival groups. These insights profoundly influenced fields ranging from primatology and anthropology to conservation and ethics.

Accompanied by a trained park ranger, we trek through the ancient rainforest in search of chimpanzee families, listening for their high-pitched calls echoing through the canopy. While the hike can be challenging due to steep terrain, the reward is immense: sitting quietly and observing wild chimps grooming, playing, or foraging – often just a few meters away – is an unforgettable, humbling experience.

Along the way, you may also spot other primates such as:

  • Olive baboons

  • Red-tailed monkeys

  • Red colobus monkeys

  • Blue monkeys

  • Colobus monkeys

In addition to the wildlife, Gombe offers stunning landscapes: we hike to a scenic waterfall, and climb to an elevated viewpoint overlooking the lake. On clear days, you can see across to the mountains of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

A Walk Through History

Your guide may also point out locations where Jane Goodall set up her original feeding stations and observation posts. You’ll learn about the chimpanzees by name – like David Greybeard, the first chimp who trusted Jane, and Flo, the matriarch of a line that researchers followed for decades.

There’s an optional visit to the Gombe Research Center, where Goodall’s research legacy continues through the Jane Goodall Institute, which supports conservation and community education across Africa.
