Mount Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route –
Group Trek 2027

10-Day Kilimanjaro Group Trek

31 July – 9 August 2027

About Mount Kilimanjaro

Mount Kilimanjaro, rising to 5,895 metres above sea level, is Africa’s highest mountain and one of the world’s most iconic trekking destinations. Located in northern Tanzania, Kilimanjaro offers an extraordinary journey through several distinct ecological zones – from lush rainforest and heathland to alpine desert and the dramatic, snow-capped summit of Uhuru Peak.

Climbing Kilimanjaro is more than reaching a summit. It is a journey of endurance, breathtaking landscapes, cultural encounters and unforgettable moments on the Roof of Africa.

The Lemosho Route

The Lemosho Route is widely considered one of the most scenic and rewarding routes for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. Starting on the western side of the mountain, the route offers beautiful and varied landscapes, excellent acclimatization and a quieter approach to the summit.

Over the course of the trek, the trail passes through ancient rainforest, the expansive Shira Plateau, high-altitude alpine desert and spectacular volcanic landscapes before joining the southern circuit towards the summit. The carefully designed itinerary allows for gradual altitude gain and includes the important Lava Tower acclimatization hike, helping the body adjust to the increasing elevation.

The final goal is Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres, the highest point in Africa.

10-Day Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route Itinerary

Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins with your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). Our Afrimine Tours team will welcome you and arrange your transfer to Moshi.

Located at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, Moshi is the perfect starting point for your Kilimanjaro climbing adventure. After checking in at Camp Kimanganu Safari Lodge, there is time to relax after your journey and enjoy your first evening in Tanzania.

A shared dinner provides the perfect opportunity to meet your fellow trekkers and get into the spirit of the adventure ahead.

Accommodation: Camp Kimanganu Safari Lodge, Moshi
Meals: Dinner

Before beginning the climb, discover the culture and landscapes surrounding Mount Kilimanjaro.

After breakfast, travel into the lush foothills of the mountain for a hike to Materuni Waterfall. The trail passes through banana and coffee plantations, offering an authentic glimpse into the rural life of the Chagga people, who have lived on the slopes of Kilimanjaro for generations.

After the hike, enjoy a traditional local lunch before experiencing the traditional Chagga coffee-making process. From roasting the beans to preparing a fresh cup of coffee, this is an opportunity to experience local culture in a personal and authentic way.

In the afternoon, your experienced Kilimanjaro mountain guides conduct a detailed equipment check. Your trekking boots, clothing, sleeping bag, backpack, headlamp and other essential equipment are reviewed to make sure you are properly prepared for the changing conditions on Mount Kilimanjaro. If anything is missing or unsuitable, there is still time to rent or purchase equipment in Moshi.

After the briefing, enjoy a relaxed evening before the real Lemosho Route trek begins the following morning.

Accommodation: Camp Kimanganu Safari Lodge, Moshi
Meals: Breakfast, local lunch, dinner

Trekking distance: approx. 7 km
Trekking time: approx. 3–4 hours
Altitude gain: +550 m
Start: Lemosho Gate, approx. 2,100 m
Camp: Mti Mkubwa Camp, approx. 2,650 m

Today marks the beginning of your Mount Kilimanjaro trek.

After breakfast, drive towards the western entrance of Kilimanjaro National Park. At Lemosho Gate, the group completes the park registration while the mountain crew prepares the equipment and supplies for the expedition.

The trek begins in the spectacular Kilimanjaro rainforest. Giant trees, ferns and moss-covered vegetation create a magical atmosphere as the trail winds gently uphill.

This first trekking day is intentionally moderate, allowing the group to settle into the rhythm of walking at altitude. With patience, a slow pace and plenty of hydration, the body begins its first stage of acclimatization.

After approximately three to four hours of trekking, arrive at Mti Mkubwa Camp, meaning “Big Tree Camp”. Enjoy a freshly prepared dinner before spending your first night camping on Mount Kilimanjaro.

Accommodation: Mountain tent
Meals: Full board

Trekking distance: approx. 16 km
Trekking time: approx. 7–8 hours
Altitude gain: +1,200 m
Start: 2,650 m
Camp: Shira 2 Camp, approx. 3,850 m

Today the landscape changes dramatically.

Leaving the rainforest behind, the trail climbs into the heath and moorland zone. Giant senecios and lobelias begin to appear, while the vegetation becomes increasingly sparse as altitude increases.

The trail eventually reaches the spectacular Shira Plateau, one of the highlights of the Lemosho Route. This vast volcanic landscape offers impressive views towards Kibo, the highest volcanic cone of Mount Kilimanjaro.

The day is longer than the previous one, but the pace remains deliberately slow. The guides monitor the group throughout the day and encourage the famous Kilimanjaro principle of “pole pole” – slowly, slowly.

By afternoon, the group reaches Shira 2 Camp at approximately 3,850 metres. As the altitude increases, hydration, nutrition and rest become increasingly important.

Accommodation: Mountain tent
Meals: Full board

Trekking distance: approx. 10 km
Trekking time: approx. 6–7 hours
Altitude gain: +780 m / descent –670 m
Highest point: Lava Tower, approx. 4,630 m
Camp: Barranco Camp, approx. 3,960 m

Today is one of the most important acclimatization days on the Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route.

The trail climbs steadily from the Shira Plateau towards Lava Tower at 4,630 metres. The landscape becomes increasingly dramatic as the group enters the alpine desert zone. Almost all vegetation disappears, leaving behind volcanic rock, dust and spectacular high-altitude scenery.

After reaching Lava Tower, the group takes a well-deserved break and enjoys lunch at altitude.

The route then descends towards Barranco Camp at approximately 3,960 metres. This “climb high, sleep low” strategy is an important part of successful acclimatization.

Barranco Camp sits dramatically beneath the famous Barranco Wall, with spectacular views towards the glaciers and upper slopes of Kibo. It is one of the most memorable campsites on the entire Kilimanjaro trek.

Accommodation: Mountain tent
Meals: Full board

Trekking distance: approx. 5 km
Trekking time: approx. 4–5 hours
Altitude gain: +350 m / descent –275 m
Start: 3,960 m
Camp: Karanga Camp, approx. 4,035 m

The morning begins with one of the most famous sections of the Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route – the Barranco Wall.

Although impressive from below, the Barranco Wall does not require technical climbing skills. With the guidance of the experienced mountain crew, the group carefully makes its way over natural rock steps and around the wall.

Reaching the top brings a well-earned sense of achievement and spectacular views across the southern slopes of Kilimanjaro.

The trail then continues through a series of valleys and ridges before reaching Karanga Camp at approximately 4,035 metres.

The relatively short trekking day allows plenty of time to rest, hydrate and continue acclimatizing before the final ascent towards the summit.

Accommodation: Mountain tent
Meals: Full board

Trekking distance: approx. 4 km
Trekking time: approx. 3–4 hours
Altitude gain: +605 m
Start: 4,035 m
Camp: Barafu Camp, approx. 4,640 m

Today the group enters the high alpine desert and approaches the final camp before the summit.

The landscape is now almost completely barren, with volcanic rock and scree replacing the vegetation seen during the lower sections of the mountain.

The trail climbs steadily towards Barafu Camp at approximately 4,640 metres. From here, the summit of Kibo dominates the horizon, and the reality of the upcoming Uhuru Peak climb begins to sink in.

After lunch, the focus shifts to preparation. The guides conduct the final summit briefing, checking equipment and explaining the schedule for the night ascent.

An early dinner is followed by an early rest. The group will wake around midnight for the most challenging and rewarding day of the expedition.

Accommodation: Mountain tent
Meals: Full board

Trekking distance: approx. 17 km
Trekking time: approx. 11–14 hours
Altitude gain: +1,255 m / descent –2,795 m
Start: Barafu Camp, 4,640 m
Summit: Uhuru Peak, 5,895 m
Camp: Mweka Camp, approx. 3,100 m

The Roof of Africa

This is the day the entire expedition has been building towards.

Around midnight, the group begins the Kilimanjaro summit ascent. In the darkness, guided only by headlamps and the incredible African night sky, the climb progresses slowly and steadily towards the crater rim.

The guides set a controlled pace, allowing everyone to conserve energy and manage the altitude. Every step counts.

As dawn approaches, the group reaches Stella Point at approximately 5,756 metres. From here, the trail follows the crater rim towards the ultimate goal: Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres.

Congratulations!

Reaching Uhuru Peak means standing at the highest point of the African continent.

As the sun rises over Tanzania, the surrounding glaciers, crater landscape and distant plains create an unforgettable backdrop for this extraordinary achievement.

After celebrating the summit and taking photographs, the descent begins. The group returns to Barafu Camp for a short rest and a well-deserved meal before continuing down towards Mweka Camp at approximately 3,100 metres.

It is a long and demanding day, but also the defining moment of this Kilimanjaro climbing adventure.

Accommodation: Mountain tent
Meals: Full board

Trekking distance: approx. 10 km
Trekking time: approx. 3–4 hours
Altitude loss: approx. 1,460 m
Start: Mweka Camp, 3,100 m
Finish: Mweka Gate, approx. 1,640 m

After breakfast, the final trekking stage begins.

The trail descends through the lush Kilimanjaro rainforest, where the return to lower altitude brings warmer temperatures, denser vegetation and a completely different atmosphere.

At Mweka Gate, the official Kilimanjaro trek comes to an end. The group receives its official Kilimanjaro summit certificates and has the opportunity to thank the guides, porters and cook who supported the expedition from start to finish.

A transfer then brings the group back to Moshi and Camp Kimanganu Safari Lodge.

After days in the mountains, a hot shower, a comfortable bed and some time to relax are very welcome.

In the evening, the group comes together for a Kilimanjaro Celebration – sharing stories, photographs and memories while raising a glass to the successful summit of Africa’s highest mountain.

Accommodation: Camp Kimanganu Safari Lodge, Moshi
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

After breakfast, the Kilimanjaro adventure comes to an end.

Depending on the individual flight schedule, there may still be time to relax at the lodge or explore Moshi before the journey home.

For those who want to continue exploring Tanzania, Afrimine Tours can also arrange an individual extension, including a Great Migration Group Safari in the Serengeti.

From the Roof of Africa to the endless plains of the Serengeti, the combination of a Kilimanjaro climb and a Tanzanian safari creates an extraordinary East African adventure.
