The journey takes you to Lake Eyasi, one of the most fascinating cultural regions in Northern Tanzania. Here, the focus shifts away from wildlife and towards people, traditions and everyday life.
The highlight is spending time with the Hadzabe community and experiencing their traditional way of life. You will then discover the Datoga and, on the final day, meet the Maasai. Experiencing these different communities during one journey allows you to understand not only their individual traditions, but also the fascinating contrasts between them.

Lake Eyasi – Where cultures meet
Lake Eyasi lies in the Rift Valley of northern Tanzania, southwest of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Surrounded by dramatic landscapes, dry plains and rocky escarpments, the lake forms the centre of a fascinating cultural region.
Unlike the famous safari destinations of the Northern Circuit, Lake Eyasi is not primarily about wildlife viewing. It is a place where people and their traditional ways of life take centre stage.
The region around Lake Eyasi has long been home to communities including the Hadzabe and Datoga, whose lifestyles developed in very different ways despite sharing the same wider environment.
The Hadzabe are traditionally hunter-gatherers. Their knowledge of the landscape, wildlife, plants and seasonal food sources has been passed down through generations. Their way of life is closely connected to mobility and the natural resources available around them.
The Datoga, in contrast, have traditionally followed a pastoral way of life, with cattle playing an important role in their culture and economy. They are also known for their traditional craftsmanship, particularly metalworking and blacksmithing.
The proximity of these different communities around Lake Eyasi makes the region particularly fascinating for cultural travellers. Within a relatively small geographical area, you can discover completely different approaches to family, work, food, community and the natural environment.

From Village Life to the Shores of Lake Eyasi
Your cultural adventure begins with a pick-up from your hotel in Arusha.
From Arusha, you travel towards the Great Rift Valley and the Manyara region. Your first cultural stop is Mto wa Mbu, a lively and remarkably diverse village located close to Lake Manyara National Park.
Mto wa Mbu is known for bringing together people from different parts of Tanzania. A guided village experience offers an opportunity to see everyday life away from the national parks – local markets, small businesses, farms, traditional food and the rhythm of village life.
This first encounter provides an excellent introduction to Tanzania’s cultural diversity before continuing towards the remote Lake Eyasi region.
After the village experience, you continue your journey towards Lake Eyasi, leaving the main safari routes behind.
Lake Eyasi is a very different Tanzania. The landscape is rugged, dry and peaceful, and the region is particularly important for several communities whose traditional lifestyles are closely connected to the surrounding environment.
Upon arrival at your lodge, you have time to rest and relax after the journey.
Later, your guide will give you a detailed briefing about the Lake Eyasi cultural experience, explaining the programme for the following day and introducing you to the communities you will meet.

Two Completely Different Ways of Life
Today is the cultural heart of your journey.
After breakfast, you travel to a Hadzabe community near Lake Eyasi.
The Hadzabe are one of Tanzania’s most distinctive indigenous communities and are traditionally known as hunter-gatherers. Their knowledge of the surrounding landscape, plants and wildlife has been passed down through generations.
You will spend the morning with the Hadzabe and have the opportunity to experience aspects of their traditional way of life.
Depending on the local circumstances and the activities taking place that day, the experience may include learning about traditional hunting and gathering, tools, fire-making, food sources, music, storytelling and everyday community life.
The experience is intended as a genuine cultural encounter rather than a staged performance. The community’s wishes and local customs always come first, meaning that activities can naturally vary from one visit to another.
The morning with the Hadzabe provides a fascinating insight into a way of life that has traditionally relied on an intimate knowledge of nature rather than agriculture or large-scale livestock keeping.
After the Hadzabe experience, your cultural journey continues with an encounter with the Datoga Tribe.
The Datoga traditionally live as pastoralists, with cattle playing an important role in their culture and daily life. They are also renowned for their traditional craftsmanship, particularly their blacksmithing and metalworking skills.
Meeting the Datoga immediately creates an interesting cultural contrast with your morning experience. Two communities living within the wider Lake Eyasi region, yet with very different traditions, livelihoods and relationships with their environment.

After your experiences with both communities, you return to Lake Eyasi Safari Lodge for dinner and your second night.

After breakfast, you leave Lake Eyasi and continue your cultural journey towards a Maasai boma.
After experiencing the hunter-gatherer traditions of the Hadzabe and the pastoral and craftsmanship traditions of the Datoga, today’s encounter introduces you to another fascinating culture of Northern Tanzania.
The Maasai are traditionally pastoralists, and cattle have long played an important role in their social and cultural life.
During your visit to the boma, you will have the opportunity to meet local Maasai community members and learn about their traditional way of life. You can discover how the boma is organized, learn about daily routines, family and community structures and understand the importance of cattle within Maasai culture.
The experience offers another opportunity to compare different ways of life.
The Hadzabe, Datoga and Maasai have each developed their own traditions and ways of adapting to the environment. Experiencing them during the same journey makes the cultural diversity of Northern Tanzania particularly tangible.
After the Maasai experience, you continue your journey back towards Arusha.
Your three-day cultural adventure comes to an end with a final transfer to your hotel in Arusha.
You leave Lake Eyasi with more than memories and photographs. You have experienced another side of Tanzania – one where people, traditions and the relationship with nature are at the centre of the journey.
