14 Days of Safari, Nature & Coast in Authentic Southern Tanzania
Southern Tanzania is one of East Africa’s last great wilderness regions. Far away from the classic safari routes, this journey takes you deep into untouched landscapes filled with extraordinary wildlife, lush mountains, tropical rainforests and authentic cultural encounters. Vast national parks, remote savannahs, dramatic waterfalls and the turquoise coastline of the Indian Ocean combine to create an unforgettable adventure through the hidden south of Tanzania.
Welcome to Tanzania! Karibu sana!
Upon arrival at Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam, you will be warmly welcomed by your guide and transferred to a nearby hotel.
Dar es Salaam, Tanzania’s largest city, is a vibrant blend of African, Arab and Indian influences. Even during the short transfer, you will get your first impressions of East Africa’s energetic atmosphere and bustling city life.
Overnight stay in Dar es Salaam.
After breakfast, we leave the bustling coastal city behind and travel south towards the vast wilderness of Nyerere National Park.
Formerly known as the Selous Game Reserve, Nyerere National Park is one of the largest protected wildlife areas in Africa and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The mighty Rufiji River, with its countless channels, lakes and lagoons, forms the heart of this spectacular ecosystem.
During extensive game drives, we explore the park’s diverse habitats. Open plains, acacia woodlands and riverine forests are home to elephants, buffaloes, zebras, giraffes, impalas and greater kudus. Lions, leopards and hyenas also roam these remote landscapes.
Nyerere is particularly famous for its population of African wild dogs, one of the continent’s rarest predators.
One of the highlights is a boat safari along the Rufiji River. Drifting quietly through the waterways, we observe hippos, giant Nile crocodiles and an incredible variety of birdlife including goliath herons, spoonbills, kingfishers and saddle-billed storks.
We also experience the bush on foot during a guided walking safari accompanied by armed rangers. Exploring the wilderness on foot offers a completely different perspective and reveals fascinating details about tracks, plants and smaller wildlife.
Overnight stays in a lodge nearby Nyerere National Park.
Today we continue north-west towards Morogoro, a lively town situated at the foot of the dramatic Uluguru Mountains.
The journey passes through rolling countryside, traditional villages and fertile agricultural landscapes.
Morogoro offers an authentic insight into daily Tanzanian life. A walk through the busy local market is a sensory experience filled with colorful fruits, spices, fabrics and the vibrant energy of the town.
This is a wonderful opportunity to experience local culture and interact with the people of southern Tanzania.
Overnight stay in Morogoro.
In the morning, we begin a scenic hike through the lush Uluguru Mountains, part of the ancient Eastern Arc Mountain range.
The trail passes through traditional farmland where bananas, sweet potatoes, papayas and vegetables are cultivated on steep mountain slopes. Along the way, we enjoy beautiful panoramic views over the plains surrounding Morogoro.
Our destination is the historic Morning Side Hotel, an abandoned relic from the German colonial era.
In the afternoon, we continue west towards Udzungwa Mountains National Park.
The following day, we hike through one of East Africa’s last remaining tropical rainforests to the breathtaking Sanje Waterfalls. The falls plunge nearly 170 meters down a series of dramatic cascades into the forest below.
Udzungwa Mountains National Park is considered one of Africa’s most important biodiversity hotspots. The forest is home to several endemic species including the Sanje Crested Mangabey and the Iringa Red Colobus Monkey, both found nowhere else in the world.
The rainforest also shelters colorful butterflies, tropical birds and an extraordinary variety of plant life.
Overnight stays near Udzungwa Mountains National Park.
Today we explore Mikumi National Park, often referred to as the “Little Serengeti of the South” due to its wide-open savannah landscapes.
The Mkata Plains offer excellent wildlife viewing opportunities throughout the year. Large herds of buffaloes, zebras, wildebeests and elephants roam the grasslands while lions and other predators follow closely behind.
The park is characterized by iconic baobab trees and Borassus palms, which give the landscape its unique appearance.
During our game drives, we search for giraffes, antelopes, warthogs, lions and, with luck, even elusive leopards.
Overnight stay in or near Mikumi National Park.
Our journey continues into the remote wilderness of Ruaha National Park, one of East Africa’s most spectacular safari destinations.
Traveling along the foothills of the Udzungwa Mountains and through the Great Ruaha River Valley, we reach the highland town of Iringa before continuing into the park.
Together with its surrounding protected areas, the Ruaha ecosystem covers more than 33,000 square kilometers. Here, East African acacia savannahs meet the miombo woodlands of southern Africa, creating an extraordinary diversity of wildlife and vegetation.
Extensive game drives reveal large elephant herds, numerous antelope species, zebras and buffaloes gathering around the Ruaha River.
Ruaha is also renowned for its exceptional predator population including lions, leopards, spotted hyenas, jackals and African wild dogs.
Massive baobab trees dominate the landscape and create stunning photographic scenery.
A guided ranger walk along the river offers close-up encounters with hippos, crocodiles and an abundance of birdlife.
Overnight stays in lodges inside Ruaha National Park.
After unforgettable days in the wilderness, we leave southern Tanzania behind on a scenic bush flight back to Dar es Salaam.
From above, the landscapes of the Great Rift Valley, rivers and endless savannahs unfold beneath us.
Upon arrival, we transfer to the Indian Ocean coastline where we spend our final nights in a beautiful beach lodge.
These last days offer time to relax by the sea, enjoy the tropical atmosphere or take long walks along the beach.
The warm ocean breeze and peaceful coastal surroundings provide the perfect ending to this extraordinary journey.
Overnight stays at a beach lodge on the Tanzanian coast.
After breakfast, transfer to Dar es Salaam International Airport for your onward flight home.
You leave Tanzania with unforgettable memories of wild landscapes, incredible wildlife encounters and authentic cultural experiences in one of Africa’s most untouched safari regions.
Nyerere National Park in southern Tanzania is one of the largest protected wildlife areas in Africa and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Formerly part of the famous Selous Game Reserve, the park is known for its extraordinary diversity of landscapes including rivers, lakes, wetlands, open savannahs and miombo woodlands.
The mighty Rufiji River forms the lifeline of the ecosystem and attracts huge numbers of wildlife throughout the year.
Large populations of elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras and antelopes thrive here alongside predators such as lions, leopards and the endangered African wild dog.
Compared to Tanzania’s northern parks, Nyerere offers a far more remote and exclusive safari experience with fewer visitors and vast untouched wilderness.
Udzungwa Mountains National Park is one of Africa’s most important rainforest ecosystems and part of the ancient Eastern Arc Mountain chain.
The park is internationally recognized for its remarkable biodiversity and high number of endemic species.
Dense tropical forests cover the mountains and provide habitat for rare primates including the Sanje Crested Mangabey and the Iringa Red Colobus Monkey, both found only in this region.
In addition to its unique wildlife, the park offers spectacular hiking trails, lush vegetation and dramatic waterfalls such as the famous Sanje Falls.
Mikumi National Park is often referred to as the “Little Serengeti of the South” because of its wide-open grasslands and excellent wildlife viewing.
The Mkata Plains are home to large herds of zebras, buffaloes, wildebeests and elephants, while predators such as lions and hyenas patrol the savannah.
The landscape is dotted with iconic baobab trees and Borassus palms that create a classic African safari atmosphere.
Due to its location along Tanzania’s southern safari circuit, Mikumi serves as an ideal gateway between the country’s southern national parks.
Ruaha National Park is considered one of the wildest and most untouched safari destinations in East Africa.
Together with its surrounding conservation areas, it forms a vast ecosystem covering more than 33,000 square kilometers.
The park’s dramatic landscapes feature enormous baobab trees, rolling hills, rocky escarpments, open plains and the life-giving Great Ruaha River.
Ruaha is especially famous for its large elephant population and impressive concentration of predators including lions, leopards, cheetahs, spotted hyenas and African wild dogs.
Because it receives far fewer visitors than Tanzania’s northern parks, Ruaha offers an exceptionally authentic and exclusive wilderness experience.
