ITINERARY
After a scenic and remote drive to the trailhead, you’ll walk along the Crater rim, through gorgeous foliage, past colourful wild flowers and lush trees you won’t find anywhere else in the Ngorongoro Highlands. The walk’s a real treat for montane forest birds, like the olive sunbird, cinnamon-chested bee-eater, and European roller that we spotted. You might also see some bigger animals, like giraffes, zebras and elephants (which is why you’ll always have an experienced guide and armed ranger with you).
As we walk up the steady hill, our guide explain us about the traditional uses of the various plants, as well as pointing out animal tracks and scat. We will see some pretty fresh evidence of leopards, which definitely added a sense of excitement when we are travelling on foot!
But the best bit is to have the amazing views of the crater. This is a place that not many people go to, so the views are amazing and you can take some great photos, so don’t forget your camera!
The walk is on uneven ground and through scrubby bush, but it’s not too hard, so you just need to be reasonably fit. It can get quite warm depending on the time of day. You don’t need walking boots, but it’s a good idea to wear sturdy shoes, sun cream, plenty of water and, of course, a camera.
You can either do this on your own or in a small group, with other guests staying at the same camp. If you’d like to keep your walk private, just let us know.
