Located just 8 km north of Tanga in northeastern Tanzania, the spectacular Amboni Caves are the largest limestone cave system in East Africa and one of the region’s most fascinating natural attractions.

Formed approximately 150 million years ago during the Jurassic period, the Amboni Caves cover an area of about 234 km² and consist of ten interconnected caves, although only one is currently open for guided tours.

The caves lie along the Tanga–Mombasa road, making them easily accessible for travelers exploring Tanzania’s scenic Eastern Circuit.

A Natural Wonder Millions of Years in the Making

Scientists believe the area where the caves are located was once covered by the ocean around 20 million years ago. Over time, geological processes shaped the limestone into an intricate underground network of chambers, tunnels, and dramatic rock formations.

Researchers suggest several theories for how the caves formed:

1. The Vadose Process
Rainwater absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, creating a weak carbonic acid. As this acidic water filters through limestone rock, it gradually dissolves calcium carbonate, forming cavities that eventually develop into caves.

2. Phreatic Formation
In this process, water containing carbonic acid reaches the underground water table. Even after saturation, the water continues dissolving limestone, enlarging passages and creating complex cave systems.

The result is a labyrinth of towering formations, narrow tunnels, and impressive underground halls that visitors can explore today.

Culture, Legends, and Spiritual Significance

Beyond their geological importance, the Amboni Caves also hold deep cultural and spiritual meaning for local communities. Ethnic groups such as the Segeju, Sambaa, Bondei, and Digo have long regarded the caves as sacred places.

According to local traditions, spiritual entities known as “Mizimu” (ancestral spirits) are believed to inhabit certain chambers. One of the most respected shrines inside the cave is known as “Mzimu wa Mabuvu.”

For generations, locals have visited these sacred chambers to:

• Offer gifts to ancestral spirits

A Brief History of the Amboni Caves

Although the exact date of the caves’ discovery remains unknown, they have been known and used by local communities for centuries.

• 1892: The land was acquired by Amboni Limited, a sisal plantation company operating in the Tanga region.

• 1922: The British colonial government officially declared the caves a conservation area.

• 1963: After independence, the government of Tanganyika placed the caves under the Department of Antiquities.

Today the site is managed by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism.
