Walking on the Wild Side

Tour Highlight

What is a Walking Safari?

A walking safari is a guided hike through the bush, offering a deeper connection to nature. These safaris differ from bush walks near camps by venturing further into the wilderness. With a guide, tracker, and possibly a local Maasai guide, you’ll traverse trails blazed by game or cattle herders—or even embark on pure wayfinding.

On foot, every sense sharpens. You’ll notice insects, delicate blooms, and even the wind’s direction—all missed when in a vehicle. Whether you’re a seasoned safari-goer or a first-timer, walking safaris provide a chance to stretch your legs and explore unspoiled landscapes.

For the truly adventurous, expedition-style safaris span 7–10 days, covering 14–25 kilometers daily. These expeditions end at fully equipped fly camps with warm bucket showers and hot meals.

Safety and Preparation

While thrilling, walking safaris involve risks. However, expert guides and safety protocols ensure a secure experience.

  • Pre-departure safety briefings include rules such as walking in single file and closely following instructions.
  • Participants must dress appropriately, stay hydrated, and protect against the sun.
  • Children are not permitted on walking safaris.
  • Groups are limited to 6–8 participants, accompanied by at least one armed ranger.

Walking safaris can be done year-round, with specific seasons aligning with the wildebeest migration or other wildlife activity.
