4 days - fly-in Safari from zanzibar to nyerere Nationalpark
ZANZIBAR - NYERERE NATIONAL PARK - ZANZIBAR
Highlights
Experience the abundance of animals and nature in the largest protected area in the whole of Africa – the Selous Game Reserve, now Nyerere National Park – on this southern Tanzania safari. Only a few safari tourists “stray” into this huge protected area.
The majority of the reserve is still undeveloped and will therefore fascinate you not only with its diverse landscapes and rich wildlife, but also with its untouched nature. In Nyerere, safaris are not only possible in off-road vehicles, but also by boat and on foot.
You will spend the nights in a comfortable safari lodge surrounded by the sounds and noises of the African wilderness.
Best time: June to October
ITINERARY
Your safari through the animal-rich Nyerere National Park in southern Tanzania starts today. You fly from Zanzibar to the national park in the morning and can already enjoy fascinating views of the rich wildlife and spectacular landscapes of southern Tanzania during the flight. On arrival at Mtemere Airstrip, you will be met at the airstrip and transferred to Africa Safari Lodge. You will have lunch at the lodge. In the afternoon, you will go on your first game drive and get a first insight into the wildlife and nature of Nyerere.
The national park has been a World Heritage Site since 1982 and is around four times the size of the famous Serengeti. However, only the north-eastern part north of the Rufiji River is permitted for game drives. Large herds of elephants and buffalo, giraffes, zebras, impalas, hippos and crocodiles live here. Remarkable is the large number of rare African wild dogs and many lions. The landscape is fascinating! The area is mostly flat to gently undulating and typical of Nyerere’s landscapes is the Miombo dry forest, which occupies around three quarters of the park. Grasslands and marshlands with acacia groves and baobabs dominate the northern area.
The park is crossed by the mighty Rufiji River, whose numerous branches and channels meander leisurely through the reserve. A river safari on the Rufiji is always an experience. In addition to curious hippos and crocodiles lying in wait, you can also observe numerous water birds.
You will spend the next two days with extensive game viewing in the park. On your game drives you can observe wildebeest, waterbuck, elegant eland, warthogs and zebras as well as skilled hunters such as the graceful leopard and spotted hyena and over 400 different bird species and reptiles such as crocodiles and snakes in the wild. Antelopes with their large beady eyes and graceful, athletic leaps, huge herds of elephants, giraffes and buffaloes are also a common sight.
Nyerere is also one of the few places in Africa where you can see the endangered African wild dog in its natural environment. With over 1000 animals, the park is home to the largest population on the entire continent. Thanks to the large size of the reserve, the wild animals can sometimes be seen in very large groups.
The sandbanks, lakes, islands and canals are also home to over 400 different bird species, including very rare species such as the banded fish owl and the white-backed heron. With a bit of luck, you may even spot one of the shy cheetahs stalking through the wilderness of the reserve or the relatively rare sable antelope, known for the raven-black coat of the males and their strongly curled, semi-circularly curved horns, in the midst of pristine nature.
We have planned a 2-hour walking safari with a Bushman, who will walk with you in the footsteps of the wild animals and tell you first-hand about the ancient skills and wisdom of the hunter-gatherers.
A boat safari on the Rufiji River is planned for the last afternoon. The special thing about a boat safari is that it offers the visitor a completely new perspective of wildlife on the water as well as on the river courses and banks. On the other hand, it makes it possible to observe animals living in the water at close range, primarily a variety of water birds as well as hippos and crocodiles. You will cruise on the river for about 1.5 hours and enjoy your sundowner on a sandbank.
