4 Days lake chala

- Relax in the Shade of the Kilimanjaro -

Highlights

Leave the bustle of Moshi and Arusha behind and slip away to one of Tanzania’s best-kept secrets – Lake Chala. Tucked into the rim of a volcanic crater on the Kenya-Tanzania border, this sparkling lake changes colour with the seasons – deep turquoise, sapphire blue, or brilliant emerald green. Fed by underground streams from the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, it’s a sanctuary of peace and wild beauty.

Perfect as a post-Kilimanjaro retreat or a serene break after safari, Lake Chala offers both tranquillity and adventure – from kayaking and hiking to cultural encounters with the Chagga people.

ITINERARY

We’ll arrange your transfer from Moshi, Arusha, or Kilimanjaro Airport to your lodge perched on the crater rim. The scenery shifts from rolling savannah to lush lakeside forest, and soon you’re gazing over the mirror-like waters of Lake Chala with Mount Kilimanjaro towering in the distance.

Spend the afternoon unwinding on the lodge terrace, letting the quiet settle in as the sun paints the landscape in gold.

Today takes you to the fertile slopes of Kilimanjaro. Visit a private coffee farm in Rombo, where you’ll follow the journey from sprouting plant to roasted bean – with plenty of tasting along the way. Depending on the season, you might snack on fresh peanuts and tropical fruit.

A guided village walk reveals rural Chagga life. Step into a historic cave once used as a hiding place from Maasai warriors, and share stories and traditions with a local family. Lunch is served in a traditional Chagga hut, before a colourful stroll through the weekly market (Tuesdays & Fridays only).

Choose your pace and path:

  • River Bed Trail – Wander along a dramatic, sun-baked dry riverbed to the Kenyan border, always with Kilimanjaro in sight.

  • Chala Hill Trail – An early morning climb to a panoramic 360° view: the lake, Lake Jipe, Kilimanjaro, and the endless plains.

  • Lake Walk – A rocky descent to the water’s edge; hiking boots and poles recommended.

Along the way, watch for over 200 bird species, playful diademed monkeys, graceful colobus monkeys, baboons, shy dik-diks – and with a little luck, even migrating elephants from Tsavo National Park.

In the afternoon, take to the water in a kayak, gliding past volcanic cliffs and soaking in the stillness.

Savour your final breakfast overlooking the shimmering waters before we return you to Moshi, Arusha, or the airport. Carry with you the quiet magic of one of Tanzania’s most peaceful corners.

Walking time: 1–4 hours, depending on the chosen trail.
Best for: Nature lovers, birdwatchers, hikers, and anyone seeking a perfect blend of relaxation and exploration.
