The Great Wildebeest Migration –
A Journey Written by Nature Itself

Experience it with Afrimine Tours

There are few spectacles on Earth that compare to the Great Wildebeest Migration – an ancient, untamed rhythm of life echoing across the golden savannahs of East Africa. It is not just a journey – it is a breathtaking, thunderous heartbeat of the wild, pulsing through the vast plains of the Serengeti in Tanzania and across the Masai Mara in Kenya.

Each year, over a million wildebeest, along with hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles, begin a pilgrimage that is as perilous as it is majestic. From the first calf’s unsteady steps to the thundering river crossings where crocodiles lie in wait, this is raw, untamed nature at its most powerful.

And you can be there – not just to witness it, but to feel it in your chest, hear the hooves on the wind, and see life and death unfold before your very eyes. With Afrimine Tours’ Great Migration Package, you don’t just watch the migration – you become part of it.

The Journey Month by Month:
Where the Wild Moves

JANUARY – New Beginnings in the Serengeti

The new year begins in the southern Serengeti. The herds gather, the air thick with anticipation and the scent of rain. It’s a time of calm before the storm – the lull before the great pulse begins.

FEBRUARY – The Miracle of Birth

The plains of Ngorongoro turn into nature’s nursery. Up to 8.000 calves are born every single day. Life explodes into motion – but so does the hunt. Lions and leopards prowl the periphery, and the dance between predator and prey is primal, heart-wrenching, and unforgettable.

MARCH – Feeding on Fertile Ground

The herds remain in Ndutu, feasting on the lush, mineral-rich grasses. It’s a time of growth and strength, preparing for the long, dangerous journey ahead.

APRIL TO JUNE – On the Move

As the rains begin to fall, the wildebeest sense it’s time to move. Massive herds – stretching as far as the eye can see – begin their journey northward, through the southern plains and into central Serengeti.

By June, they’ve reached the western corridor, their last rest stop before facing one of the most perilous challenges of all: the rivers.

JULY & AUGUST – The River Crossings

This is it. The moment that defines the migration.

The wildebeest stand at the edge of the Grumeti River – the water teeming with crocodiles. And then – a sudden leap! The herd surges forward. Chaos. Splashing. Roars. Survival. Some make it. Others don’t.

But the migration doesn’t stop. By August, survivors cross into the Masai Mara, the green bounty ahead worth every risk taken.

With Afrimine Tours, you’ll be positioned right at the heart of the action – on the banks of the Grumeti or Mara rivers, your guide whispering in awe as the drama unfolds before your lens.

SEPTEMBER & OCTOBER – The Splintering Herd

By now, the herds have splintered. Some remain in the northern Serengeti, while others graze in the Masai Mara. The famous Mara River crossing still lies in wait – one more gauntlet to run.

In October, the plains are full – golden, vast, alive with movement. It’s a photographer’s dream and a wildlife enthusiast’s paradise.

NOVEMBER & DECEMBER – The Return

The rains return to Tanzania, and so do the wildebeest. Driven by ancient instinct, they cross back into the Serengeti, following the scent of fresh grass and the promise of new life.

In December, they’re home – in the south and northeast Serengeti. The circle is complete. But the journey never truly ends.
