Best Time to Go for Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda & Uganda

The best time for gorilla trekking in Rwanda and Uganda is during the dry seasons, when forest trails are easier to hike and wildlife viewing conditions are at their best.

Peak Seasons (Best Conditions)

June to September & December to February

These months are considered the ideal time for gorilla trekking safaris:

  • Drier weather with less muddy trails

  • Easier and more comfortable trekking conditions

  • Clearer views in the forests and mountains

  • Excellent photography opportunities

These periods are also the most popular, so gorilla permits should be booked well in advance.

Green Season (Great Value & Fewer Crowds)

March to May & October to November

This is the rainy season, but it offers its own advantages:

  • Lush, green landscapes and dramatic misty scenery

  • Fewer tourists and a more intimate trekking experience

  • Often better lodge availability and pricing

Rain usually falls in short showers, and gorilla trekking is still possible year-round.

Gorilla trekking is possible all year, and each season offers a unique experience—whether dry and clear or lush and mystical.

ITINERARY

A gorilla trekking permit is mandatory for anyone visiting the gorilla families in Rwanda, Uganda, or the Congo. Because only a limited number of permits are issued each day to protect the gorillas and their habitat, availability is highly restricted and can sell out months in advance.

For this reason, we strongly recommend planning and securing your gorilla trek well ahead of your travel dates to ensure your preferred trekking day and location.

Afrimine Tours will arranging your permits as part of your booking.
