Hotel Pickup and Transfer to Marangu Gate

Your Kilimanjaro Marangu day trip begins in the morning with pickup from your hotel in Moshi or Arusha. From there, we drive to Marangu Gate, the main entrance to Kilimanjaro National Park, located at approximately 1,800 meters above sea level.

At the park gate, you will meet your professional Kilimanjaro mountain guide, who will assist with registration with the National Park authorities. This is also the main administration point of the park and features information boards about the mountain’s geology, ecosystems, and the first successful ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro in 1889 by Hans Meyer and his Chagga guide Yohani Kinyala Lauwo.

Hiking Through Kilimanjaro’s Rainforest

Once the formalities are complete, your Marangu Route hike begins. The trail gently climbs through dense montane rainforest, one of the most fascinating ecosystems on Mount Kilimanjaro.

During the 4–5 hour hike, you will walk along forest paths surrounded by towering trees, giant ferns, and thick lianas hanging from ancient fig trees. Many of the trees are covered with bearded lichen (Usnea), creating an almost mystical jungle atmosphere.

The rainforest is also home to a variety of wildlife and bird species. With a bit of luck, you may spot:

• Colobus monkeys moving through the canopy

• The impressive silver-cheeked hornbill

• The colorful Hartlaub’s turaco, whose bright red wings flash through the forest

• Various butterflies and tropical birds

Along the trail, you will also see beautiful mountain flowers such as Begonias, the bright red Impatiens kilimanjari, and the purple Impatiens pseudoviola, adding vibrant colors to the lush green environment.

Mandara Hut and Maundi Crater

After a steady ascent through the rainforest, you reach Mandara Hut, located at about 2,700 meters above sea level. Here you can take a well-deserved rest and enjoy a picnic lunch surrounded by nature.

From Mandara Hut, a short 2 km walk leads to Maundi Crater, a collapsed volcanic crater formed by the ancient activity of Kibo, Kilimanjaro’s main volcanic cone.

The crater area is covered with wild grasses, flowers, and unique alpine plants such as silver tree vegetation. The small crater can be explored in just a few minutes, and from its rim you may enjoy stunning views of:

• The surrounding Kilimanjaro landscape

• The valley below

• The town of Taveta near the Kenyan border

• Lake Jipe

• The Pare and Usambara Mountains

Depending on your preference and fitness level, your guide can adapt the hike. Options include a relaxed walk to a nearby waterfall or a more challenging hike further toward Horombo Hut.

Return to Marangu Gate

In the early afternoon, you begin the descent back through the rainforest toward Marangu Gate. The walk down allows you to enjoy the jungle scenery once more and take in the peaceful atmosphere of Kilimanjaro’s lower slopes.

You will arrive back at the gate in the early evening, where your driver will be waiting to take you back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha.
