Trek Overview

The Machame Route, also known as the “Whiskey Route,” is a popular and scenic way to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. Starting at 1,800 meters (5,906 feet), the trek takes about six to seven days, passing through Machame Camp, Shira Camp I, Barranco Camp, and Karanga Valley campsite before reaching Gilman’s Point at 5,685 meters (18,649 feet). The descent is via Mweka Gate.

This route offers stunning views of Kilimanjaro’s glaciers, ice fields, and diverse vegetation. It requires good physical conditioning due to steep ascents and long hiking days but allows for acclimatization, reducing the risk of altitude sickness.

ITINERARY

Start your trek from Machame Gate. After registering at the Kilimanjaro National Park gate, begin your hike through a lush rainforest. Look out for blue and colobus monkeys and enjoy the beautiful flora. After a 5-7 hour hike, you will reach Machame Camp. You will stay in tents. All meals are included.

Today, hike from Machame Camp to Shira Camp. The trail leads out of the rainforest and into moorland, offering stunning views of Mount Meru and the Shira Plateau. The hike takes 4-6 hours. You will stay in tents. All meals are included.

Climb the Barranco Wall and hike to Karanga Camp. This day involves some steep sections but offers breathtaking views. The hike takes 4-5 hours. You will stay in tents. All meals are included

Today, hike from Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp. The trail is steep and rocky, leading you to your base camp before the summit attempt. Spend the afternoon resting and preparing for the final ascent. The hike takes 4-5 hours. You will stay in tents. All meals are included.

Begin your final ascent to Uhuru Peak around midnight. Reach Stella Point at sunrise, then continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After enjoying the views, descend back to Barafu Camp for breakfast and rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp. The ascent takes 6-8 hours, and the descent takes 4-6 hours. You will stay in tents. All meals are included.

On your last day, hike back down to Mweka Gate. The trail descends through the rainforest. At the gate, your guide will arrange your certificates, and our driver will take you back to your hotel for a hot shower and celebration. You will stay at Ngare Sero Mountain Lodge. All meals are included
