New Tanzania Entry Requirement for
Safari, Kilimanjaro & Mainland Tanzania Travel

If you are planning a Tanzania safari, Kilimanjaro trek, Mount Meru climb or holiday in Mainland Tanzania, there is an important new Tanzania travel requirement you should know about.

The Mandatory Inbound Travel Insurance for Mainland Tanzania applies to foreign travellers entering Tanzania through an airport, land border or seaport.

The current official information from the National Insurance Corporation of Tanzania (NIC) states that the insurance costs the equivalent of USD 44 per person and provides cover for up to 92 days.

At Afrimine Tours, we want our guests to arrive in Tanzania prepared and relaxed. Therefore, we have put together the most important information about the new Tanzania mandatory travel insurance.

What Is the Mandatory Travel Insurance for Tanzania?

The Mandatory Inbound Travel Insurance is a travel insurance requirement for foreign nationals entering Mainland Tanzania.

The official NIC information states that the insurance applies to foreign visitors entering Tanzania through:

  • Airports
  • Land borders
  • Seaports

This includes popular entry points for international travellers such as Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam.

The purpose of the insurance is to provide emergency assistance and financial protection during a visitor’s stay in Tanzania.

Tanzania Travel Insurance Cost

The current premium for the mandatory inbound travel insurance is:

USD 44 per person

The premium is payable in Tanzanian shillings equivalent to USD 44.

The policy provides coverage for up to 92 days and, according to the NIC FAQ, allows multiple entries within Mainland Tanzania during the policy period stated on the certificate.

For families and groups, the applicable premium should be checked directly through the official NIC portal before purchase.

What Does the Tanzania Mandatory Travel Insurance Cover?

The mandatory inbound travel insurance is designed to provide assistance in the event of certain emergencies during your stay.

According to NIC, the cover includes:

Emergency Medical Assistance

Cover related to eligible medical emergencies during your stay in Tanzania.

Emergency Medical Evacuation

Assistance for emergency medical evacuation to an appropriate medical facility, subject to the policy terms.

Emergency Repatriation

The policy also provides for emergency repatriation in accordance with the applicable terms and conditions.

Loss of Luggage

The policy includes protection relating to loss of baggage.

The exact benefits, limits, exclusions and conditions are defined by the insurance policy. Travellers should therefore read the policy documents carefully before travelling.

Do I Still Need My Own Travel Insurance?

Yes – absolutely.

The Tanzania Mandatory Inbound Travel Insurance should not be confused with comprehensive personal travel insurance.

If you are travelling to Tanzania, we recommend maintaining your own appropriate international travel insurance in addition to the mandatory inbound policy.

This is particularly important if your itinerary includes:

  • Kilimanjaro trekking
  • Mount Meru trekking
  • High-altitude activities
  • Safari activities
  • Medical treatment
  • Emergency evacuation
  • Trip cancellation or interruption
  • Other travel risks not covered by the mandatory policy

Important for Kilimanjaro climbers

If you are climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, check carefully that your personal travel insurance explicitly covers high-altitude trekking and emergency evacuation.

The mandatory inbound insurance does not mean that every possible cost associated with a Kilimanjaro rescue, treatment or evacuation is automatically covered.

Your complete travel insurance protection should always match your actual itinerary.

Who Needs the Mandatory Tanzania Travel Insurance?

The current NIC information states that the mandatory inbound insurance applies to foreign nationals entering Mainland Tanzania through airports, land borders and seaports.

There are exemptions for certain categories of travellers.

For example, NIC currently states that residents of EAC Partner States and SADC Partner States are excluded from the mandatory cover requirement. Travellers with specific residence or immigration statuses should check directly with NIC to determine whether an exemption applies to them.

When Should You Buy the Tanzania Inbound Travel Insurance?

NIC advises foreign travellers to obtain the insurance before arriving at the entry point.

A proof-of-coverage certificate may be requested upon arrival for verification.

We therefore recommend arranging the policy before your flight to Tanzania.

After purchasing the insurance, save your certificate:

  • On your smartphone
  • In your cloud storage
  • As a printed copy in your travel documents

Check that your name, passport number and travel dates are correct.

Where Can I Buy the Tanzania Mandatory Travel Insurance?

The official National Insurance Corporation (NIC) portal provides the online application for Mainland Tanzania’s mandatory inbound travel insurance.

NIC states that the premium can be paid online using debit or credit cards, with payment options also available at entry points.

The official portal also provides a digital insurance certificate that can be presented for verification when required.

Tanzania Safari + Zanzibar: What You Need to Know

Many of our Afrimine Tours guests combine a Tanzania safari with a Zanzibar beach holiday.

This is where it is particularly important to distinguish between Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar.

Mainland Tanzania:

NIC – Mandatory Inbound Travel Insurance

Zanzibar

ZIC – Zanzibar Inbound Travel Insurance

Zanzibar introduced its own mandatory inbound travel insurance system in 2024. Tanzania’s insurance regulator, TIRA, has documented the implementation of the Zanzibar scheme separately from the Mainland Tanzania system.

If your itinerary includes both Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar, your point of entry and current insurance recognition arrangements are important.

We recommend checking the latest official requirements before travelling rather than relying on older travel information.

Example: Flying from Europe to Kilimanjaro

Imagine your itinerary looks like this:

Germany to Kilimanjaro International Airport – Tanzania Safari to Zanzibar – Germany

Your first arrival is at Kilimanjaro International Airport, which is on Mainland Tanzania.

Therefore, the Mainland Tanzania mandatory inbound travel insurance is relevant to your entry.

Your safari might then take you to:

  • Tarangire National Park
  • Ngorongoro Conservation Area
  • Serengeti National Park
  • Lake Natron

before continuing to the beaches of Zanzibar.

This is a typical Tanzania Safari + Zanzibar combination offered by Afrimine Tours.

Does the Insurance cover my entire Tanzania Holiday?

The NIC policy is valid for up to 92 days, with the coverage period based on the dates stated on your insurance certificate. NIC also states that the policy can cover multiple entries within Tanzania during its validity period.

If your trip is longer than the permitted period, NIC states that an extension can be arranged before the policy expires.

Always check your individual certificate and policy conditions.

Tanzania Entry Requirements: What should you prepare?

Before travelling to Tanzania, we recommend checking all current entry requirements and having your important documents ready.

Depending on your nationality and itinerary, this can include:

  • Valid passport
  • Tanzania visa, if required
  • Mandatory Mainland Tanzania travel insurance
  • Personal international travel insurance
  • Flight documents
  • Safari booking confirmation
  • Accommodation details
  • Travel and trekking documents

Requirements can change, so always check the relevant official information before departure.
